"The police department and the fire department will take over the existing city hall area," said Public Works Director Jim Martin. "We will have the customer service on the main floor (of the new city hall) with sewer billings, garbage billings, that sort of thing, walk-in customers. Public Works and the Building Department will be on the second floor, where we will also have a nice conference area."
With the new city hall, council chambers will have a separate entrance from the offices.
"What really is going to be a treat is having an actual council chambers that can seat some people that come to our meetings," said Martin. "So we are basically doubling our current size of our chambers. One of the things that we've always fought for, for years, was meeting space. Our new facility will have a couple conference rooms, some extra offices if need be, but we wont have to fight over meeting space anymore."
The city has not taken over the building yet as they bought it "built to suit". Martin said they expect the building to be completed by July. Then the city will pay for the building.
"By the time we are finished it's going to be in the neighborhood of a little over $1 million," said Martin. But these days that's a bargain, considering the square footage we are getting and it will definitely be a savings over building completely new."
