Juveniles arrested after allegedly shooting vehicles on Highway 8

MOSCOW – The Latah County Sheriff’s Office said two male juveniles were arrested Friday after they allegedly fired shots at vehicles traveling on State Highway 8 east of Helmer.

The Sheriff’s Dispatch received reports of passing vehicles being struck by gunfire in the area of Highway 8 and Forks Road at around 1 p.m.

Deputies from the Latah County Sheriff’s Office and the Idaho State Police responded to the scene and established a perimeter.

Highway 8 was closed for about one hour, from milepost 29 to milepost 34. Deputies and troopers searched the area, but suspects were not found in the vicinity.

The location where the shots were fired was eventually discovered and two male juvenile suspects were identified and taken into custody. Both have been charged with Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm at a Vehicle, a felony.

Initial investigation indicates several vehicles, including semis, were struck and damaged. No injuries were reported.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said the incident is still under investigation but that the area of Helmer and Forks Road is secure and there should be no further threat.
