At UI, students kicked off a week of events to bring awareness to the cause, something volunteer Michael Jones said isn't easy to do.
"I think it has kind of a stigma, people walking around avoid eye contact with it (a display they had set up)," said sophomore volunteer Michael Jones. "It just needs to have a better awareness."
Along with various speakers and HIV/AIDS films, volunteers with the Multicultural Club handed out condoms. And there was also free HIV testing.
"It's no needles or anything, it's a cotton swab and it takes about 20 minutes and you get the results right then," said Jones. "It's kind of for if you have AIDS and you don't know about it, so you don't spread it around. It's just one of those thing if you get tested and you don't have it it's like ‘phew!’"
Free HIV/AIDS testing was also offered at WSU.
