Je veux aller a Paris
Genesee French Club students discuss their trip to Paris. By Stephanie Smith
GENESEE - They are taking the trip of a lifetime.
16 Genesee High School students and three chaperons left Monday for Paris. Most of the students have never been out of the country before. The trip is through the school's French Club, spearheaded by teacher Abilio Monteiro. "Even if you take away the language factor, the French language factor, for them to know the culture too, if you just look at the world today, it's getting smaller and smaller and our businesses are going overseas. They need to be able to travel and to understand the world is becoming smaller," said Monteiro. Although not quite sure what to expect and maybe even a little nervous, the students said mostly they are excited to see something new. "I'm kind of expecting the unexpected," said senior Sam Hermann. "I'm expecting to feel a little lost there. That will be an experience, to be the outsider rather than knowing what's going on." The group raised $11,000 over the last two years to help pay for the trip. "We've done rock picking, we've done stands at Community Days in Genesee during the summer, we've done a wine tasting at the wine bar for a French get together for a bunch of adults, we went to different companies, asked for sponsors and wrote letters," said senior Chelsey Phares. The group will spend a week in the City of Lights seeing and tasting the culture. "I am really excited to go to the palace of Versailles," said Senior Chyanne Carcich. "That's my highlight of the trip for sure. And then I 'm going to try escargot." And of course speaking the language of love. "Je veux aller a Paris," said Phares. |
