Winter doesn’t arrive for a month – yeah, right

LEWISTON - Much of the Quad-Cities region has tasted winter weather already, with snow falling in the past few days and sub-freezing temperatures dating back to early October.

Idaho State Police says if you haven't done so already, now's the time to prepare for months of bad driving conditions.

"Probably most important is some things they can do before they hit the roads and one of them is to check their car over, all of the basics, check the tires to make sure you've got some good tires, they are all season or winter radial tires as we get ready for this winter season. Another thing is make sure all your fluids are topped off in the vehicle, make sure the belts in the vehicle are good," said ISP Trooper Darren Gilbertson.

When it comes to accidents, Gilbertson said there are some common mistakes.

"People don't allow themselves enough time to get where they are going and slick or icy roads really slow them up. So we tell people to give themselves some extra time before they get out on the road and another thing is your following distance. Your stopping distance is going to be a lot greater on icy roads. Back off from vehicles a lot more than you normally do," said Gilbertson.

Gilbertson said whether snow or ice, don't slam on your brakes.

"Gently put the breaks on and no sharp, erratic steering. If you go into a slide just try to steer out of it or gently brake to try to slow yourself," said Gilbertson.

Another important thing is to make sure you have a fully stocked emergency kit in the vehicle, plus blankets and water in case you are stuck somewhere.
