CLARKSTON – Tuesday is primary election day in Washington.

In the race for Clarkston city council Larry Baumberger is running for re-election against Monika Lawrence and Amanda Albrecht.

For District 9 State Representative the slate includes Republicans Susan Fagan, Pat Hailey, Darin Watkins and Art Swannack and Democrat Glen Stockwell.

In Whitman County a special election is also taking place. The proposition would impose a levy tax of $37,000 to be collected in 2010 and 2011 for Whitman County Rural firefighting equipment.

The primary is held in August to give election officials time to prepare the November ballots. It is a "top two" system, meaning regardless of party the top two candidates advance to the general election.

Ballots in Whitman, Garfield and Asotin County must be postmarked by Tuesday. All three are vote-by-mail counties.
