University of Idaho to delay Parma closure

Duane Nellis

BOISE (AP) — University of Idaho President Duane Nellis says he is delaying plans to close the Parma Research and Extension Center in 2010.

Nellis, who started as university president July 1, made the announcement during a joint appearance with Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter in southwest Idaho on Wednesday.

The university, facing a $3.2 million budget cut for 12 agriculture and extension centers statewide, said last month it planned to stop using the Parma facility by Dec. 31.

Fruit growers in the region use the station to do research on their crops and criticized the plan, calling on Otter to keep the Parma center open.

Nellis says he wants more time to review the university's research and extension centers across the state.
