MOSCOW - More details are coming out about the crime that took Moscow teacher Sarah Parks' life and the man who now sits behind bars facing murder and arson charges.
Police arrested Silas Parks, Sarah's husband, Wednesday in Moscow. According to a probable cause affidavit, Parks told police he went to work out at a gym at 6:45 in the morning on June 24, the day of the fire. Police say he later said it was 7:20. According to security tapes at Anytime Fitness in Moscow, Parks went in at 7:39, less than ten minutes before a fire at the couple’s apartment was reported to 911. "Mr. Parks, according to the PCA, spoke with investigators and related his activities on that day, and those statements, and what the police department was able to corroborate and discount led to the decision by the police department yesterday to go ahead and take him into custody," said Bill Thompson, Latah County prosecutor. Initial autopsy results showed Sarah Parks died before the fire. Doctors said there were no traces of smokes in her lungs. According to the affidavit, doctors say Parks died of a lack of oxygen as the result of strangulation or suffocation. Investigators continue looking into an apparent history of domestic violence in the couple's relationship. Silas Parks was cited in 2006 for throwing his wife to the ground during an altercation. "It was a citation for a misdemeanor domestic battery, that Mr. Parks ended up pleading to at a reduced level. And he was going into counseling at that point in time," said Thompson. Police say Parks told them that there had been at least three domestic violence incidents in his relationship. He said fights would escalate to the point where he "saw red" and in each instance pushed Sarah to the ground. Fire investigators also believe Parks set the fire at the apartment at 904 Vandal Drive. An investigating ATF agent says such a fire is commonly used to cover up crimes. Thompson says the next step is to find out more about the couple’s relationship. "Authorities want to discover as much as we possible can about what's going on in these folks' lives," said Thompson. "What may have led to this occurring. There's evidence that's been gathered, that's being sent to laboratories for analysis. So we're still early on." Parks made an initial appearance in Magistrate Court Wednesday, where he was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson. He is being held in the Latah Co. Jail without bond. |
