ASOTIN - The Asotin County Sheriff's office confirmed Monday that a man drowned in the Snake River over the weekend at Buffalo Eddy.

Deputies said they had identified the man, but were not releasing his name until family is notified. Asotin County Sheriff Ken Bancroft said it appeared the victim was not from the local area.

Prosecutor Ben Nichols, who is also the county coroner, said Tuesday morning that there is still some question as to the identity of the victim.

The man was apparently swimming in the Snake River on Saturday night with friends when he got too far out in the water. Witnesses say they heard the man yell for help before he disappeared into the river.

Deputies say the 27-year-old man was dead when they found him, though firefighters did try to resuscitate him using CPR.
