ASOTIN - Anatone could soon have fire protection.

Asotin County Commissioners okayed adding a measure to the November ballot that would create the Blue Mountain Fire District. The group would fight wildfires on 160 square miles roughly between Snake River Road to the East and Meyer Ridge to the West.

"We met later and discussed out boundaries this fall and decided to put the boundaries in an area that we are real comfortable with and knew we had the majority of support and was a managable area logistically wise for the group," said Fire District Formation Committee Spokesman Matt Seibly.

The group will ask for a $13,000 levy and would also provide mutual aid to the Asotin County Fire District.

"This can be formed and with out any grants we can at least get this thing established and get some protection out there," said Seibly.

In other county news, Commissioners heard a presentation from the Public Transit Benefit Area or PTBA about how they plan to improve their bus routes within the county.

"This whole system, I built it around what Lewiston is doing right now so these two cities can connect," said PTBA Route Coordinator Greg Gill.
