LEWISTON - You didn’t have to tell anglers in the Steelhead Derby about the importance of fish in the region. But how can you get that across to kids?

Some Idaho teachers are trying to bring the values that go along with fishing into the classroom.

Idaho Fish and Game in Lewiston recently hosted a workshop for 16 area teachers. Officials said the new Trout in the Classroom curriculum allows students to raise trout "from egg to fry" in a classroom aquarium.

Officials said the hands-on learning opportunity for youth raises awareness about Idaho's aquatic life. Before it goes to the kids, teachers get a chance to get their hands dirty with fish dissection and a tour of a local hatchery.

The teachers said they hope to incorporate the topic in a number of school subjects.
