LEWISTON – If you haven’t been getting cold water at your Country Club Drive residence, you probably already know why.

One of Lewiston’s wells, Well 5, is out of commission.

"It has been losing production over the last year and a half," said Water Systems Manager Dave Six. "It got low enough that we felt we should take it out of service."

Six said they have received two bids so far to fix the pump and hope to get work started soon. In the meantime, Well 6 is being used to provide water in Country Club areas.

"That well, quality-wise, is the same," said Six. "Except it has a higher temperature. It's 82 degrees where Well 5 was probably around 60."

Six said Well 6 taps into a thermal source, therefore the warm water. Six said the positive to this is that in the winter your water heater won’t have to work as hard.

But he said it will be months before Well 5 is fixed. Six said it could take longer if the well needs re-drilling, at a cost of up to $180,000.

"It would be hopefully early next year, before summer hits," said Six. "We use that Well a lot in the summertime to supplement what we take out of the river."
