Court appointed special advocates, CASA for short, provides volunteer advocates to kids who've been abused and neglected. The advocates help local children through the emotionally trying court processes involved in child protection cases. But, due to a small budget from the state level and the high cost of recruiting volunteers, CASA is struggling to keep up with the high demand of child protection cases.
"The money would go to recruit more volunteers for our program. Our case loads went up 58% in the last two years,” said District 2 CASA Director Gay Lewis. “So we really need to recruit more volunteers to be an advocate for a child."
So here's how you can help. District 2 CASA, which serves the Lewis-Clark Valley and the surrounding region, is hosting their third annual "For the Love of a Child" wine tasting event. It’s on Friday, February 14th at the Clearwater Canyon Cellars in North Lewiston. It’s from 5:00-8:00 p.m. and costs $25 per ticket. Last year, they made only $2,000 less than the cost of recruiting one volunteer.
