LEWISTON - It was a Whopper Wednesday to remember. A crowd gathered outside the Lewiston Burger King on 21st Street Wednesday afternoon to protest what they said are instances of racism at the fast food restaurant.

Customers, former, and even current employees made up the group who all seemed to have a different experience with Burger King. Former employee 25-year-old Tiffen Jackson said prejudice within the chain forced him to quit his job.

"I had three incidents, the main one being the manager calling me the 'N' word, and saying the 'N' word to another co-worker of mine," said Jackson. "It's just very disturbing and it's made it very hard to work at Burger King."

Jackson worked at the restaurant for a couple months before what he calls uncomfortable and offensive instances forced him into unemployment. He said while the situation was awful, it inspired him to spread what he calls an important lesson to the community.

"We're all trying to make the community aware that they shouldn't be racist," he said. "As you can see, we're doing a great job and sent out a great message."

Jackson said steering people from the drive-thru wasn't the only goal of protesters.

"Hopefully, in the near future, someone won't feel the way I felt, and this message will get out there in a positive way and have a positive influence," he said.

Jackson said he hopes the demonstration not only forces Burger King to take a close look at its staff and policies, but also motivate residents to stand up for what's right.

"I feel that it just starts here," Jackson said. "This is a stepping stone. Hopefully everybody who sees this can learn and grow from it."

Burger King management declined comment Wednesday afternoon, and asked KLEW’s reporter to leave the property.

Jackson has since found work at Wendy's.
