LEWISTON - It's the first of it's kind in the area, and was deemed illegal by the Lewiston Planning and Zoning Administration.

It's an LED sign located next to Anytime Fitness on Thain. Last night officials from Lamar Outdoor Advertising appealed the decision to the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The point of contention, is an illumination clause in the city's billboard code. The code allows only for indirect lighting.

Ken Hobart of Lamar Outdoor Advertising argued that, although the sign is lit up from within the sign it is still indirect lighting. Commission agreed. The motion to uphold the appeal, made by Sue Somers, passed unanimously.

The commission said they will also look at getting the city to update the code to incorporate new LED technology.
