LEWISTON - A suspect wanted for murder in Louisiana attempted suicide in the Nez Perce County Jail Monday afternoon.

34-year-old Robert L. McCoy, who was arrested Friday night in Lewiston, is wanted on three counts of murder in Louisiana.

Jail Commander Lieutenant Steve Lutes issued a news release Monday night saying McCoy was found hanging from a bed sheet just after 3 p.m. Lutes said officers at the jail began CPR immediately. Lewiston medics arrived and continued CPR. They shortly had McCoy breathing and responsive. He was then wheeled out of the courthouse and transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

Acting Sheriff, Chief Deputy Dale Buttrey, said McCoy was apparently speaking to a deputy about not being able to access a phone. He says the deputy then reportedly went to make arrangements for McCoy to use a phone. When the deputy returned about five minutes later, he found McCoy hanging from the bed sheet.

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center spokesman Doug Barton said the hospital was not releasing any information about McCoy's condition because of the ongoing investigation, but Lutes said McCoy was responding to medical treatment and doing well.

McCoy was captured in Lewiston thanks to a tip from the FBI.

"Idaho State Police called our department because they had been contacted by the FBI and they had been given information that this suspect, Mr. McCoy, was in a Swift truck and the Swift truck had a GPS tracking unit in it and they had tracked it to our jurisdiction," said Captain Roger Lanier, with Lewiston Police.

Lanier said the truck's driver got lost on his way to the Swift Trucking location in North Lewiston and ended up on Normal Hill. Lewiston Police saw the vehicle and performed a high risk traffic stop.

"He (McCoy) gave a couple different dates of birth, a couple different social security numbers," said Lanier. "Identifying him positively was a little bit difficult. We emailed a digital photo back to Louisiana, they identified him off of that and then we booked him on the warrants, three homicide warrants out of Louisiana. In the subsequent search of the truck, they found a 380 caliber handgun behind the passenger seat of the vehicle where the passenger was sitting."

Police say the truck driver had picked McCoy up in Stateline, Idaho and said he did not know McCoy was on the run.

"This fellow, Mr McCoy, was just trying to get to California, so he (the driver) offered him a ride," Lanier said. "He did not suspect that he was wanted in anyway."

Lanier said officials plan is to extradite McCoy back to Louisiana.

Lanier said he does not know how the FBI knew that McCoy was in Lewiston.

McCoy is also facing charges in Nez Perce County. According to court records, he was arraigned Monday morning for providing false information to an officer and having a concealed weapon without a permit.

He is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on those charges Tuesday morning.
