LEWISTON - Step one: demolition. Step two: reconstruction.

The first step is finished for the Lewiston Public Works Department. Officials met Wednesday to discuss what's next for the wastewater treatment plant in North Lewiston.

"Renovations may be undertaken to retrofit the structure to meet current building codes, so that's why a structural engineer has been retained," said Assistant City Engineer Scott Macey.

Officials had considered extending demolition to the first floor and the basement. They now say no more demolition will take place, and they're talking about getting the building back to how it was.

"We need to ensure the mechanical equipment on the inside has not been damaged by the explosion," Macey said. "If we find damage has occurred to the mechanical equipment, we have to add that to the scope of the claim."

Representatives from the plant's insurance company, as well as a structural engineer hired by the city, are working on planning for reconstruction. Macey said there's so much to check on, there's no way of knowing when that might start.

"We have a separate adjustor that's looking at a boiler that's in the structure," he said. "They're going to do a fire-up of the boiler to ensure that it wasn't associated with the explosion. The other phase is our structural guy needs to make a recommendation on where we go in terms of the renovation."

All of the work is taking place because of a an explosion and fire at the plant January 20.
