LEWISTON - Now that the dust has settled, the winners in Tuesday's election are taking the next step.

One close local race was for Nez Perce County Commissioner District 2 race, where former Lewiston mayor Doug Havens defeated incumbent Democrat Ron Wittman.

"Well, I'm just excited to get going," said Havens. "I enjoy public service and I enjoy working for the people, so I'm just really looking forward to an exciting time. We stayed up until 3:30 in the morning waiting for that last precinct. We thought it'd be close and boy it was a nail biter. We stuck it out until the bitter end and I'm just real happy with how it turned out."

Havens said the morning after the election, there was already a lot to do to get ready for the new position.

"They've got me signed up next week for some orientation classes that take place up in Moscow," said Havens. "It's a two-day course and they've already signed me up for that. So I'll be heading up, I think it was Tuesday and Wednesday."

Havens said it was a tough campaign, but he's looking forward to serving the people of Nez Perce County.

"I believe in conservative budgeting," said Havens. "Especially in these tough times. So I'm going to be looking at the budget real close. Budget talks will really start in earnest in April and May. And I believe in open government. I really think we need to pursue anything that brings transparency to the way the county does business."
