"I'm running for county commissioner because I have something to offer to help reign in government spending," said Havens. "I think that we have a serious problem with that. The private sector is being asked to cut back, individuals are being asked to cut back and we need to do that in government too. I still enjoy working in government, been on the council for 4 years. I worked as mayor for two years. We got a lot accomplished and I intend to do that in the county."
Havens, a Republican, said he's the person for the job because he can get things done.
"I hope people realize how much I got done when I was on the city council," said Havens. "We worked very hard, we took on some very tough issues and we never shied away from anything. Now this election could be made about personalities and that kind of thing. I'd rather focus on the issues."
He said the county is facing several issues that he wants to tackle.
"We will be looking at funding for the transfer station and our partnership with the city," said Havens. "We will be looking at the airport authority, getting it's legs under it and funding for that and funding government in general. And I just don't believe in government living beyond it's means. I don't believe in commissioners voting themselves a raise when the private sector is being asked to cut back."
