LEWISTON - The Lewiston Roundup wasn't officially under way but that didn't mean things weren't in full swing out at the Roundup Grounds Wednesday.

It was Slack Day. Rodeo Secretary Steve Cravens says they often have so many entries in a rodeo, they can't all be in the performance round, so timed events were done Wednesday as well.

"They can put in performance preference and they also have a buddy system," said Cravens. "So it's a pretty complicated program actually at PRCA. It looks at all the parameters. It looks at who's buddying up with who. Who prefers to be in what performance and when do they want to be up. And then that determines who's in the performance, and who's in slack."

Cravens says a computer generates the order contestants will compete in. But because of time constraints only the first 12 from each timed event will get to ride in the performance round.

"It has to be exactly the same in order to be fair for all of the contestants, because they're all going for the top money," said Cravens. "So all of the conditions have to be the same and that's what our PRCA judges are for. They come in and judge during the extreme bulls tomorrow night as well as the rodeo performance Friday, Saturday and Sunday."

Cravens says a record number of over 500 entries means there's enough rodeo for everyone.
