Angie's List: When does your vehicle need oil changed
LEWISTON, ID - Does your car need an oil change every 3,000, 5,000 or 7,000 miles? It depends on a variety of factors.

"My car is a fairly new car, so it has a computer that tells me that it's time for the oil to be changed," said consumer Amy Adams. "It's pretty simple."

"Years ago the time to change your oil was really simple, every three months or 3,000 miles," said Angie's List Owner Angie Hicks. "With the improvements made to engine oil as well as cars you need to depend on your owner's manual for the best recommendation of how frequently your car may need an oil change. It could be 3,000, 7,000, even 10,000 miles."

"When it comes down to it changing your oil every 3,000 miles it isn't going to hurt your car, it's only going to hurt your wallet," said Hicks. "This is a great way for you to look at saving some money this year by following the directions as to how frequently you should change it. If you think about it, it might save you $100 a year if you follow the manufacturer's suggestions."

"If you skip a lawn treatment you can always catch up and recover your lawn, but your engine will wear and you won't get that back," said auto shop owner Jim Trump.

"Over the years the most common complaint we hear in regards to oil changes is upselling," said Hicks. "Consumers feel like they sometimes are pressured to buy things that they don't know whether they need or not. Your best defense against being upsold is to know what the manufacturer recommends at different intervals for your car."

"Oil changes lubricate the engine and keep it from wearing," said Trump. "An oil change is the most important thing you probably can do for your car to keep the car healthy."
