Police: reports of racially motivated harassment continue, 5 have been arrested
LEWISTON - Lewiston Police say a Native American girl and her mother have been the victims of what appears to be racially motivated harassment and intimidation since last Wednesday.
The girl, who is 13, was allegedly the victim of an assault, when she was beaten by two females. In a news release issued Monday, police said on last Wednesday night the girl was “attacked and beaten” in front of her residence in the 600 block of 3rd Avenue. Police said several individuals were reportedly shouting “White Power” when the girl responded by saying “What about Native Pride?” Police said at that point the girl was allegedly attacked, struck in the face, knocked to the ground and kicked. Police said she was able to escape into her apartment. Police arrested 40-year-old Jill Grant for Malicious Harassment and issued an arrest warrant for her daughter, 21-year-old Ashley Grant. Police said, the following night, a car drove by the alleged victim’s apartment and reportedly began shouting “White Power.” No suspects were located at that time. On Saturday, police said 16-year-old Christian M. Grant and 18-year-old David C. Moody were arrested outside the alleged victim’s apartment building shouting “White Power.” Both were charged with Intimidation of a Witness. Police said Grant is the son of Jill Grant. Police said about an hour later two more men were arrested for shouting “White Power” outside the apartment building. Arrested were 22-year-old Mike S. Moody and 19-year-old Jason R. Grant. They are the older brothers of Christian Grant and David Moody. Police said the alleged victim and her mother were then moved to a local motel for the remainder of the weekend, but on Sunday night, there were reports of someone shouting “White Power” in the motel parking lot. No suspects were located and the alleged victim and her mother were moved to another location. The investigation is continuing. |
