Saturday marked the beginning of Spring and the gardening season.
"Planting a garden is good for the environment because you can get your own fresh vegetables, you know cabbage, lettuce, all the good nutritious stuff," said Fuchs Flower and Garden co-owner Chris Fuchs. "It's a lot better if you do it yourself versus what you might buy at a store. It's helps the environment with oxygen, clean air and you don't have to ship your vegetables, so you're getting rid of all the middle people, the trucking and everything else."
Fuchs said along with helping the environment, having a garden can also reduce your cost at the supermarket.
"If you buy a tomato, like a three-and-a-half inch for $1.30, you're going to get at least 10 to 20 fold over on that and your peppers and that, "said Fuchs. "It's well worth it."
Fuchs said starting a garden at home can be as simple or complex as you choose. And as far as what grows the best around the Valley...
"Most everything that we grow does real well here in this area," said Fuchs. "There's some things you have to be careful with because some are shade plants, some are sun and some are partial sun. Pretty much you need to read the label and if you need information just call us and ask us."
