Six additional officers stopped over 100 cars on Saturday as part of a DUI emphasis patrol.

"As a result of the area law enforcement's efforts, we arrested nine people here in Lewiston for DUI," said Lewiston Police Sergeant Ted Piche.

A grant from the Office of Highway Safety paid for the extra patrols during a time when many citizens were celebrating St. Patrick's Day with a pub crawl. Besides arresting drunk drivers, police issued citations for suspended licenses and made a couple arrests on felony warrants.

"We've actually seen some of the DUI arrests go down during the enforcement periods, which is really a win because people know that we are out there in force, we are out looking for that impaired driver, we are stopping folks for minor violations and we are getting less DUI arrests. And that's a plus for law enforcement," said Piche.
