PULLMAN - A 2-year-old Pullman girl is in stable condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center after being diagnosed with Neissera meningitidis, a bacterium associated with meningococcal meningitis.

Whitman County Health officials say the girl got sick last week and ended up in the emergency room of Pullman Regional Hospital. She was then transferred to the Sacred Heart Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

The bacterial infection is contagious and spread through saliva and respiratory droplets. Persons in close contact with a patient can reduce their chance of infection by taking antibiotics soon after exposure.

Children under five are the most susceptible.
