DUI emphasis patrols begin Saturday night in the area. Lewiston Police Officer David Gobbi said LPD, along with the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office and Idaho State Police, are sharing a grant to put extra officers on the street.
"We'll be looking for any type of law violation to stop a vehicle and we'll make contact with the occupant and make the determination if they're possibly DUI or not," said Gobbi. "If they're not DUI then they'll be on their way, if they are then we'll go through the process."
Gobbi said the emphasis patrols will last about two weeks. He said if you're behind the wheel, make sure you're sober.
"When some people say a designated driver a lot of times they refer to that as being the person in the group who's drank the least amount that night," said Gobbi. "We say get a sober driver, get somebody who hasn't been drinking at all. Designate that type of person to be with you and make sure that person is the one that does all the driving."
Emphasis patrols for different violations happen a few times a year. Gobbi said the main reason is to help the citizens of Lewiston.
"You're going to see a lot of police cars out, especially on Saturday night," said Gobbi. "Not just from our agency, but from surrounding agencies as well. It's a joint agency project and our whole goal is to keep everybody is the community safe."
