LEWISTON - Mayor Kevin Poole says it was a mutual decision to end Jay Krauss' tenure as city manager for City of Lewiston.

"If he didn't have an option, we would have taken the "for cause" route," said Poole during an interview Wednesday. "We knew we didn't have the six votes for just the 4 months severance so we took the other route, and knowing that we had 4 votes for cause but the council felt that it was important to recognize that Mr Krauss had accomplishments and the city is thankful for those. That's part of the agreement."

Poole did not state a reason or cause for the council seeking Krauss' separation.

"It's just the dynamics of the council and where they want to go with the city," said Poole. "They felt it best that we make that change and proceed that way and recognize the accomplishments that Mr. Krauss has done, but also recognize that we felt that we would be more comfortable proceeding with someone else as manager."

Poole said he was not surprised by the number of people at the meeting, but was disappointed at some of those in attendance.

"I guess what I was surprised at or disappointed in is the disrespect and lack of professionalism of some people that were in the crowd," said Poole. "That's one of the things, that the government needs to be open and transparent and the only way that can be is people conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner."

Councilor Thyra Stevenson, who voted for the separation agreement, said Wednesday she's happy with the outcome of Monday's meeting and is now looking at moving forward.

"A very professional agreement and in this way, as professionals, we can speak complimentary to each other about the things that we have accomplished and go forward in a dignified and professional way," said Stevenson. "It's going to be a bright future for the City of Lewiston."
