ASOTIN - Garbage rates at the Asotin County Landfill are squeezing the city of Lapwai.

That's the word from Lapwai Mayor Rick Hernandez at Monday morning's Asotin County Commission meeting.

"It is becoming a critical expense for our little city," said Hernandez. "Right now, the city clerk just let me know, we're paying anywhere from $500 to $5,500 a month in sanitation costs."

Commissioners approved opening up a dialogue to discuss the city's rate and contract. Also at Monday's meeting, Public Works Director Joel Ristau gave an update on the ten mile bridge project. Ristau said they will have to seek funding through several avenues inorder to complete the project. The county wants to replace the existing bridge and rework the approaches to it on Snake River Avenue.
