LEWISTON - Two big checks were cut and presented to two Valley non-profits Monday night.

Monday night the Lewiston Eagles Club presented the checks for $5,000 apiece to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Center and Opportunities Unlimited.

Eagles Club Auxiliary Director Darlene Walston said the money was made available through a national grant.

"The whole state sends money into the grant, which is through our national Eagles," said Walston. "Then that is broken down and every Eagle organization throughout the state is able to apply for these grants, but there is only so much money available in each area. We were lucky enough to be able to get two of these grants for $5,000."

Opportunities Unlimited said the $5,000 will be spent on therapy to help autistic children, so they don't have to go out of state for treatment.

St. Joes will use the money for their new cancer center.

"We're growing in leaps and bounds, we definitely need more space," said Cancer Center Director Pam Reed. "In June we plan to relocate to the Idaho Street building, which is currently owned by St. Joe’s, but requires renovation and along with that extra equipment. This money will be used to purchase an exam table for our patients, which is your way of helping them and the center here locally. Traveling is difficult, so keeping it here in the Lewiston-Clarkston area is wonderful."

Walston said the Eagles Club applies for the grants every year and is fortunate to be able to help out those who help others.
