Man suffers serious injury when shotgun explodes in his hand

GRANGEVILLE - A Bellevue, Idaho man has been discharged from a Spokane hospital after being seriously injured in a hunting accident on Christmas Day.

According to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, their dispatch center received a report of a subject that had been severely injured in a hunting accident.

Deputy Mike Brewster and the Syringa Ambulance responded to the scene near Hwy 7 and Bryant Road.

There they found 46-year-old Shawn Crea, who had been bird hunting with some companions when he fired his Model 11 Remington shotgun. The gun exploded, severely injuring his left hand.

None of Crea’s companions were in the immediate vicinity, but his cries were heard by nearby hunters Andy Terhaar and Greg Adams who called 911 for assistance.

Terhaar transported Crea to the roadway to meet Syringa Hospital’s ambulance, which transported him to St. Mary’s Hospital. Crea was subsequently taken to Lewiston and then transferred to Spokane for further treatment.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion continues. Initial information indicates an improperly hand loaded shell may have been the cause.
