CLARKSTON - Thursday night Shawn Buroker, who was wanted for violating his probation and allegedly making threatening statements against law enforcement, was captured in Asotin County Thursday night and is being held in the Nez Perce County Jail.
Now Ed Hedrick, of Clarkston, is speaking out about the capture, saying the 21-year-old he considers a son, was falsely represented to the public. "The DOC made a huge mistake doing what they did," said Hedrick. "They put the public in danger by doing what they did, people could have went off and somebody could have died. People could have died because of this. It was a probation violation, a misdemeanor stupid thing." Hedrick contacted Action News Friday, saying he felt the search for Buroker was uncalled for. He said he had a relationship with Buroker's mother when Buroker was a baby and said he and Buroker have been in each other's lives ever since. Hedrick said Buroker considers him a father figure. He was happy when Buroker showed up on his porch Wednesday night to take him Christmas shopping, something Hedrick said is hard to do because of a disability. "I'm a sick person and to get out, bless his heart and soul, he got me out of the house in the daytime," said Buroker. "I went to Walmart of all things and that boy was watching me like a hawk, taking care of me, getting me through that store and helping me pick out some gifts for my daughter. We passed police officers and people in the store and everything. He did everything he could to help me getting out of my home, to get there, to put presents under my tree. Otherwise there wouldn’t be presents under that tree" Hedrick said he doesn't believe Buroker would be serious about threats against law enforcement. "A real threat and follow through with it? No, absolutely not. He isn't his father, I don't care what anyone portrays him as. He's not his father," said Hedrick. "His father was the man that would do it, and did do it. That's just typical talk, I mean if he did even say these things." Buroker’s father, Ira Buroker, died when a gun went off during a struggle with Spokane police in December of 2001. He allegedly made threats against the officers involved in that incident. Buroker declined an interview Friday. When contacted about the alleged threats by Buroker, the U.S. Marshals office in Spokane said those threats were reported by citizens who said they overheard Buroker talking to acquaintances. They also said the threat he posed may have been overstated by authorities. Buroker was sentenced to 3 years probation in 2008 for attempted burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary at the 17th Street Dairy Mart in Lewiston. |
