MOSCOW - All month long the Moscow Food Co-op is matching food donations pound-for-pound for local food banks.

It's something Outreach and Membership Coordinator Carol Spurling said is important during these hard economic times.

"We decided that during the month of December we would match, because the Co-op has had a good year and we have the flexibility to be able to do that, "said Spurling. "It's been rough economically for many families in the community this year and our sales didn't go up, but our members and our customers were very loyal, so we did manage to have a good year economically. We have some to share and it's important to our members and staff that we give back to the community."

A great part about matching donations? The Co-op can provide the food banks with items they need most.

"We'll talk to them at the end of the month and find out what their needs are, if they need particular things more than others then we'll give them what they need to round-out their shelves," said Spurling.

The basket for donations is in the Co-op year round, but since the matching program started a few weeks ago, Spurling said donations are up.

"I think that donations have been up," said Spurling. "Right now there's a good amount of food in there and they pick it up pretty regularly."

The shelf for donations is located inside the store's entrance on Fourth Street.
