ASOTIN - Wolf hunts are taking place in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming and now a group of cattlemen is calling for them in Washington.

The Washington Cattlemen's Association met Tuesday night in Asotin. Vice President of the Association, Jack Field, discussed a preliminary proposal to start a Washington wolf management plan.

"We've got a split status with the feds," said Field. "Everything east of 395, and we are included in that here in Asotin County, is federally delisted. But the entire state is still state listed so we've got some interesting dynamics. The federal government, more or less, talking to the folks in Portland at the U.S. Office of Fish and Wildlife, said they've done about all they care to do in Washington with the eastern third of the state."

Field said the current proposals ask that there be 15 breeding pairs before hunts, but they are asking that that number be reduced to eight pairs.
