MOSCOW - Moscow Police say a University of Idaho student was injured when she fell from a fraternity house third-floor window early Thursday morning.
Police responded to the 911 call at the fraternity at around 1:10 a.m. There they found 19-year-old Amanda Andaverde of Caldwell who had fallen 27 feet from a window at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. She suffered multiple fractures and was transported to Gritman Medical Center, then airlifted to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d'Alene, then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was listed in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. She is a sophomore at UI studying animal and veterinary science. This is the second fall from a fraternity house third-floor window on the UI campus in less than two weeks. 20-year-old Shane Meyer, of Boise, fell from a third-story window at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity on August 29. He is listed in serious condition at Harborview, where he has been in the Intensive Care Unit since being admitted. Assistant Police Chief David Duke says alcohol is believed to have been involved in Thursday morning's accident. He said they also believe it was a factor in the incident involving Meyer and that they are waiting for medical records in that case. Duke said police are looking into who may have provided alcohol to the students, since they are both minors. The university released the following statement concerning the most recent incident: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Amanda and her family today; we are saddened by news of this tragic accident and keep her recovery in our hearts and prayers." "The University of Idaho is concerned about the safety of all of its students. Incidents like this are rare at our residential campus in Moscow. In the immediate aftermath of this morning's incident, the Dean of Students and his staff and counselors reached out to Amanda's family and fellow students to provide support as needed. We are working in cooperation with the Moscow police as they review and investigate this incident." "In light of this incident, we are taking additional steps concerning residential safety, including: • Meeting tonight with leadership of University fraternities and sororities to review their risk management processes •Communicating with alumni leadership of the House Corporation, who are the private owners of the fraternities and sororities. We are asking them to do a safety audit of their houses with specific attention to upper-story safety • Staying in communication with Moscow police. Information coming from these meetings and reviews will help inform the next safety steps for Greek houses at the University of Idaho." |
