CLARKSTON – Asotin County Sheriff Ken Bancroft has confirmed that Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been diagnosed some inmates who have been booked into the Asotin County Jail.

"When a person comes in with MRSA, or it's discovered that they have MRSA, we will segregate them from the rest of the population, immediately scrub down the cell that they were in, replace any bedding linen, all of that stuff, and get them the appropriate medical care," said Bancroft. "Once their medical issue has been resolved we will reintegrate them in with the rest of the jail population."

On Monday an inmate with MRSA was scheduled to appear in Asotin Superior Court and had to be at the end of the docket because the courtroom had to be cleaned afterward, before anyone else could enter.

"There have been no cases starting in the jail, people are bringing it in with them," said Bancroft.

Bancroft said he's not aware of anyone spreading the infection within the jail. He said that is because of strict procedures that are followed.

"We monitor that very closely, take it very seriously and make sure that all steps are taken to prevent the spread of it," said Bancroft.
