Beauty is in the eye

Beauty is in the eye

CLARKSTON - How young is too young to get a cosmetic procedure?

When it comes to skin care, more and more young adults are looking to professionals to answer that question.

In a two part series, KLEW News takes a look at the local world of cosmetic enhancements and when a person might consider getting "work" done.

It is said that beauty is fleeting. That statement probably rings true in the minds of many women, and even men.

Contemporary society tends to place more and more emphasis on looks: how to keep that youthful glow, how to get rid of embarrassing wrinkles, and how to turn back the hands of time? The ads for products and procedures are everywhere.

So whatever happened to aging gracefully?

"We're taking better care of ourselves," said Kim Burns, Laser Technician & Manager at Viaggio Medical Spa in Clarkston. "We're living a longer life. Why not look as good as you feel? A lot of my friends, their parents are 102-103 years-old and still very active. So, why not look how you feel."

This reporter feels like I'm 18, but thanks to extended hours of sun exposure, my skin doesn't. So I decided to get some work done to see if certain treatments really can make my skin look as young as I feel.

"It's never too young to start with these procedures," said Burns. "People that are outside, they'll have a lot of sun damage and not even realize how much damage they actually have. It's very important to get on a good skin care line and always wear your sunscreen, especially in our area."

During my consultation, Doctor Valerie Fox at Viaggio Medical Spa in Clarkston suggested that I get laser resurfacing, skin tightening, and microdermabrasion in order to take away the effects of sun damage like fine lines and dark spots.

"It is so important that after we pull off those spots or get rid of those wrinkles, you want to make sure you stay on a good skin care line and wear your sunscreen to make sure you're not going to have spots or wrinkling occur later after you have taken care of your skin and gone to the expense of having the procedures done," said Burns.

(Next, a look at the procedures Autumn will undergo and digging a little deeper into the world of beauty.)
