County goes to 24-hr recycling

ASOTIN – Recycling is now possible at any hour of the day at the Asotin County Landfill

Starting Monday a new entrance to the landfill is open. County road crews built the new entrance, to be shared with the baseball fields.

"Now the recycling area is going to be open to the public 24-7," Public Works Director Joel Ristau told county commissioners Monday. "We'll monitor it like the other sites. We've had pretty good success with limited amounts of trash and things like that. There is a little bit of risk having it open all the time, but it does provide another opportunity for folks to recycle."

Ristau said this should relieve some parking issues along 6th Avenue.

In other county news, commissioners approved a project agreement with the County Road Administration Board for work to be done on Snake River Road. Ristau said the first phase of the project, which re-grades and paves the road into Hells Canyon, is already in the works and this is the second phase, which has received over $720,000 in funding.

"So that's sufficient to start at least the design element on it," said Ristau. "What happens in the next array is that projects that were funded under the previous array take priority on receiving the remainder of the funding."

Also Monday morning, commissioners approved a grant application for boating safety.

"We're essentially eligible for approximately $16,000 for boater education, boater safety patrols," said Asotin County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Dan Hally.
