Asotin Co. commissioners get census briefing, appoint new assessor

"I nominate Mr. Dave Abbott," said Asotin County Commissioner Doug Mattoon. "Mr Abbott comes to us with a BS degree in finance and an MBA also from the University of Idaho. He has worked for Verizon for 26 years in management, leadership positions, brings a level of education and professionalism to the position that we are extremely fortunate to have available to us."
Abbott was appointed unanimously and will start next Monday. He fills the job left vacant following the resignation of Anthony Rogers over alleged misuse of his office.
Also at Monday's meeting, a discussion of getting the numbers right, as commissioners heard a presentation about the 2010 census and how it will work.
"It is very important that we are as accurate as possible so that the dollars that are needed to come to your communities reach your areas," 2010 Census Bureau Representative Noemi Ortega told commissioners.
Commissioners signed a proclamation of support for the census. Ortega talked about the census as a civic duty and said all gathered information will be kept confidential.
Starting in two weeks census employees will be out canvassing the streets documenting homes into GPS systems. Ortega said many of the employees were hired locally.
In other county news, commissioners approved accepting a grant for the Sheriff's Office to purchase three video cameras for patrol cars with five more being purchased with other funds.
