LEWISTON - The construction never seems to end. Last summer, it was the groundbreaking at the new jail. In the fall, police finally moved out of portables in the parking lot next to what is now a newly renovated facility.

Now, the view from the current sheriff’s office and Lewiston Police offices is again construction.

The City of Lewiston is renovating the area known as Rettig Plaza. Police will be using the space to dedicate a memorial to five officers who have died in the line of duty. But that's just part of a $20,000 beautification by Lewiston Parks and Recreation.

"It'll be new concrete ribbon, brick pavers," said Lewiston Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Moss. "The new memorial, there'll be a fountain, new lighting and landscaping."

The plans have been in the works for awhile, but the plaza has only been dug up for a couple weeks. Moss said the area is an extension of F Street, so water lines have to be upgraded first. He said he recognizes the inconvenience.

"It's obviously at both of the front doors, so we're trying to get people to come in through other, alternate routes while we're getting that fixed," said Moss.

A dedication will be held for the memorial in the spring. It will also showcase a fountain and benches in front of the Police Department, and what will be the new County Prosecutor's office.

"We expect to have the underground work done here shortly, and then we'll put the ribbons and brick pavers in, and that work will all be done before Christmas," said Moss.
