Pride of Clarkston needs new threads

CLARKSTON - They are award winners and they want to look like it.
They are the Bantam Marching Band. Clarkston High's marching band has been wearing the same uniforms for 17 years and they think it is time for a change. “We have now been using the same set of uniforms since I was in high school," said Band Director Bill Legg. This makes them older than the students who now wear them. "The fact that it is older than me is really odd," said senior band member Michael Mackey. "Since bands usually get new uniforms every five years, I think we are long overdue." Once there were 300 uniforms. Now the band is down to 110. They said it's only a matter of time before there aren’t any left. "When a cuff rips we will take a good cuff off of a jacket that got torn or stained up here and put that over there and things like that," said Legg. "This is the old drum major uniform, very off-color white," said Mackey. "This is our new one, definitely can see the difference in colors right there and this even has a cape, which you can see here. You gotta love the cape. " New uniforms will cost about $350 each and they need 150. The marching band parent group has saved $1,000 but they need 60 grand. "Uniforms are worn a minimum of about 22 times per year," said Legg. "We march come rain, come shine, we have marched in the snow even." They perform at football games, parades as well as several competitions. Compared to the other marching bands students said they just don't look as sharp. "Wow," said Mackey. "We are the really old band. Wow." "With the sashes, when you play a saxophone, these, they get really destroyed," said senior Caitlin Harris. "Half of them don’t even have sequins on them so that's kind of embarrassing."
