ASOTIN – Some Anatone area residents want to take control of their road

Landowners who live along Bennett Ridge Road sounded off before Asotin County commissioners at Monday's public hearing on the matter.

"The intentions of this vacatement is because were having problems with firewood cutters, multiple loads of firewood, four wheelers, and people four wheeling in their vehicles, tearing the property up," said landowner Britt Osmond. "All the landowners along both sides of the road can't seem to get control of the situation."

The homeowners along just over four and a half miles of road signed a petition concerning the action. They hope to gate off the road, since it only leads to private property. The board made no decision Monday morning.

In other county news, commissioners announced a re-bid for pool covers and reels as well as fitness equipment for the aquatic center. Some original bids were incomplete or received after the deadline.

Commissioners also approved the county drug policy. The policy includes pre-employment testing and random testing for some employees.

"I would like to, and I'll be very public about it, I would like to drug test the jailers and the police officers," said Human Resources Director Shannon Inzunza. "Unfortunately we have not gotten there yet."

Commissioner Doug Mattoon said he would like to see random drug testing for jailers and the sheriff's department as part of future contract negotiations with the unions.
