Repairs underway at LC dorm

LEWISTON - Fires lit up the Valley Monday night. One of them led to the closure of a dorm apartment complex used by LCSC students - College Place.
"Monday night there was a big lightning storm, as everybody knows in the Valley, and a couple of LCSC physical plant employees decided to check the buildings out because in the past there have been problems during a lightning storm," said LCSC spokesman Bert Sahlberg. "They noticed smoke coming from this building, so they came inside. The story goes that they opened a vent up somewhere and a big bellow of smoke came out and they immediately called the fire department and by the time the fire department got here there were actually visible flames, so the fire department got into the walls and into the ceiling and put the fire out quickly." The college does not own the building, but it is exclusively for LCSC students. Wednesday crews assessed the damage and worked on repairs just as students prepared to head back to class. "It wasn't a very big fire, but it did enough damage to three suites to be closed for right now," said Sahlberg. "The building is closed until everything gets ok'd and inspectors come through and can check it out." A couple of students had already moved in at the time of the fire and ended up being evacuated. "We actually had three students in the complex at the time of the fire, but none of them were in the rooms affected," said Sahlberg. "They were all on the bottom floor and they didn't lose anything, none of their stuff was damaged." |
