Valley Transit board will discuss contract issues
The fate of Valley Transit buses in the LC Valley is still undecided. By Matt Loveless
LEWISTON - Valley's Transit's fate with the City of Lewiston is still unknown.
The bus system and the city are still discussing the possibility of the city taking over operation of the services. Last month in a work session, councilors approved the use of $20,000 toward two Dial-A-Ride buses, creating a city fleet. At that time, City Manager Jay Krauss said they would be in a better position to control costs associated with the service. Valley Transit Executive Director Tom LaPointe said last Thursday his organization is hoping for a decision soon. "Valley Transit's board is meeting Thursday, to discuss contract issues involving the City of Lewiston," said LaPointe. "All of us are very eager to bring contract discussions to a good conclusion for all concerned." Valley Transit's contract with the city is up the last day of September. Previous discussions have included the use of a 30-day-period for Valley Transit to help the City get their ducks in a row. LaPointe would not talk about the fate of Valley Transit buses and employees, but said riders shouldn't have anything to worry about. "We don't anticipate any change in services for our clients," said LaPointe. "The issues remain unresolved at this point, but discussions are still ongoing, so that’s a hopeful sign." |
