Lewiston police officers take the stand in Grove trial

By Hayley Guenthner

LEWISTON - Two Lewiston Police officers took the stand Wednesday morning at the trial of a Lewiston man accused of first-degree murder.

Detective Brian Birdsell and Captain Tom Green of the Lewiston Police Department were witnesses for the prosecution.

Green says he conducted the first interview with Stacey L. Grove after deputies responded to the 911 call about 23-month-old Kyler Martin on the morning of July 10, 2006. Green said Grove provided officers with no explanation for the condition of the infant and that Grove told police the little boy's eyes suddenly rolled into the back of his head while watching TV.

Grove has since changed that story. In his opening statement, attorney Scott Chapman said Grove turned his back and the little boy fell off the counter.

Spokane County Medical Examiner Dr. Marco Ross testified that the injuries Kyler sustained could not have resulted from the fall.

Green said in an interview after the proceedings that he and Birdsell have not yet been released as witnesses. The prosecution says they will present their final witness Thursday.
