Police wrap up aggressive driving emphasis
By Hayley Guenthner
LEWISTON - Speeders and tailgaters were the targets the past several days.
Extra Idaho State Police and other agency patrols hit the road through Sunday, and ISP Lieutenant Allen Oswald said anyone driving dangerously was getting stopped. "Part of our traffic safety program, Idaho State Police and other agencies throughout the area, picks specific driving patterns,” said Oswald. “Recently it was DUI's over the Fourth of July and coming up, we're targeting aggressive driving." Oswald said there are a number of factors that constitute aggressive driving. "Speeding, changing lanes erratically, tailgating, people who are in a hurry who aren't willing to pass safely, unsafe passing. It's a culmination of inattention and not willing to go the speed limit." Oswald said bad driving is life threatening for everyone, and that those with road rage need to chill out before someone gets hurt. "Not only do you put yourself at risk, but you put other motorists at risk as well,” said Oswald. “One pattern we see with aggressive drivers is them also driving with a lot of anger. They get upset when they're behind a vehicle. That culmination makes a lot of problems for us. People are upset." Oswald said those demonstrating the classic signs of angry driving were given special attention during the emphasis patrols. "If you are driving aggressively on Idaho's highways, you will be stopped and you will get ticketed. If it's severe enough, you may be taken to jail." |
