Medical examiner takes the stand in Grove trial

By Hayley Guenthner

LEWISTON - It was day two Tuesday in the first-degree murder trial for 29-year-old Stacey L. Grove of Lewiston.

Grove is charged in connection with the death of 23-month-old Kyler Martin in July of 2006. Several witnesses took the stand Tuesday for the prosecution, including a member of the Lewiston Fire Department and three doctors, each from a different hospital.

Spokane County Medical Examiner, Dr. Marco Ross, testified for the majority of the day. He disputed Grove's claim that Kyler's injuries resulted from a fall off a counter. Ross said the amount, severity, and location of the harm is inconsistent with that. And he said the autopsy revealed several lacerations throughout the toddler's abdomen, thighs, head, and eyes.

Ross testified that injuries of that nature would not allow the little boy to be as upbeat and alert, which is how witnesses described him after seeing him the day before and the morning of the alleged crime.

Ross estimated that the fatal blows occurred one to two days before Kyler's cardiac death on the morning of July 12.

More prosecution witnesses are scheduled to take the stand Wednesday. The trial is expected to run for at least several more days.

Grove will testify in his own defense, according to his attorney. Grove remains free on a $100,000 bond.
