Stacey Grove consults with his attorney in 2nd District Court Monday. By Hayley Guenthner
LEWISTON - The murder trial for 29-year-old Stacey L. Grove of Lewiston began Monday in 2nd District Court in Lewiston.
Grove is charged with the first-degree murder of 23-month-old Kyler Martin in July of 2006. Both sides delivered opening arguments before the jury and 2nd District Judge Carl Kerrick Monday morning. Nez Perce County Prosecutor Dan Spickler said testimony will prove Grove beat the little boy the morning of his death. He said Grove was watching the toddler at the home of Grove's reported girlfriend and the little boy's mother, Lisa Nash. also of Lewiston, at the time of Kyler's death. Spickler said he has several witnesses ready to take the stand this week, including two emergency room doctors, the Spokane Medical Examiner who performed the autopsy, and the first officers on scene. He said their statements will show how no one else but Grove could have committed the crime. Defense attorney Scott Chapman painted a different picture, saying Grove deeply loved and cared for the infant. Chapman said he hired another medical examiner to take a look at the evidence and said the examiner will testify that the injuries were sustained two or three days prior to Kyler's July 10 death. Chapman said the only thing Grove is guilty of is turning his back on the baby who Grove says took a fall off a counter while Grove searched for a comb. Chapman said Grove will take the stand in his own defense. Lisa Nash was scheduled to testify Monday. The trial is expected to last through the week. Grove is currently free on a $100,000 bond. |
