WWCC helps out family of little girl killed in hit and run

CLARKSTON - Sherry Byrd, the mother of Sydney Byrd, the 8-year-old Lewiston girl killed last week in a hit and run, is a second year nursing student at Walla Walla Community College. And the school has pulled together to support the family during their time of need.
"We try to care of our own,” said Brandon Whitlock, a WWCC nursing major. “It's hard just doing this program by yourself, you study with other students, you get to know them, it becomes a family atmosphere. When something like this happens, we just try to come together and make it as best as possible. The nursing students made a plan to help wherever they can, like Wednesday’s cookout. "The day that we found out about it, we just went around with a little bucket, and told everybody what was going on and had them put cash donations in there,” said Whitlock. “Today we are having a barbeque and all the proceeds are going to go to the Byrd family." Whitlock said students are also helping to provide the family with transportation and next week will be starting a canned food drive. "Not only have we helped out as Walla Walla Community College, LCSC's helped out, their nursing program, our main campus in Walla Walla Washington, they're helping out with this too. So it's a big community project for us, to try to make sure the Byrd family gets through this situation." Whitlock said Sherry Byrd is scheduled to walk with her graduating class next month and then finish classes this summer. If you would like to donate to the Byrd family, call Kim at Walla Walla Community College in Clarkston at 758 1705. Next week you can drop off non perishable food into boxes at the campus. |
