Barbershop quartet entertains blood donors
The Quad-Cities Quartet was singing the day away Friday at the Inland Northwest Blood Center. By Matt Loveless
LEWISTON - Harmonies and arteries. All in one place.
As part of a Mother's Day weekend blood drive, the Inland Northwest Blood Center asked for a pint in the name of May's favorite parent. "We are handing out flowers to all the donors who are coming in to donate blood,” said Alicia Baker-Halsey, recruiter/coordinator for INBC. “It's just a special time, trying to get people to come in a get on the national registry for our bone marrow program." Stealing the show Friday were the members of the Quad-Cities Quartet. The singers come from the Palouse Harmony Chorus. Baritone Craig Rockwell says barbershop singers perform in blood centers around the country, and it's nice to be able to help support a good cause. Even though these are four experienced sets of vocal chords, Rockwell said it was the first time they had sang as a quartet. "We started about a half hour ago,” said Rockwell. “We were just four guys that were available from the group. We just happened to be able to get all four parts and come out and sing. We're glad to be here. It's really a pleasure to come down and do something for something as important as the blood centers around the country." The quartet spent a few minutes working on their harmonies Friday before people showed up. Rockwell said he hoped the music helped take donors’ minds off the needle. "We haven’t broken any glass yet, and I don't know that we're going to shatter any wine goblets. We haven't gotten booed out of the building yet. We're having fun. It's always fun to get together and sing with the guys." |
