CLARKSTON - Firefighters spent all day Saturday battling a blaze at the Asotin County Family Aquatic Center. They were trying to extinguish at least a dozen flare-ups, all in the name of training.

Asotin County Fire District One sponsored the Saturday session in the lower parking lot at the Aquatic Center.

Chief Noel Hardin said the uniquely equipped training truck came from Walla Walla and provided a rare opportunity for the Valley's firefighters.

"The whole goal here was to bring to fire training and the fire exercises to town so people can take advantage of that," said Hardin. "We're really excited that we can have so many firefighters here in the area be able to go through it."

Lewiston, Clarkston and City of Asotin firefighters and officials were there along with Asotin County's crew. One of the exercises involved simulating a basement fire in a confined space.

Hardin said they essentially had an on/off switch so everything could be as safe, but as realistic as possible.

"It's a great opportunity for firefighters to get in, have some flames rolling, have some smoke, and do some things in a real controlled environment, and we don't get that opportunity very often," he said.
